King in yellow, 2024
Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies,
But stranger still is
Lost Carcosa.
Just over 130 years ago, one of the strangest texts in world literature was discovered. A lovely and disgusting text that has haunted us for a large part of our lives: The theater play “The King in Yellow”.
The play was first mentioned in 1895, in the short story collection “The King in Yellow” by Robert W. Chambers. Through dark descriptions, the storyline of the play is hinted at: the last days of a doomed civilization, a yellow symbol and a king. Perhaps he is the very cause of the disaster that is coming. Or perhaps a symptom, a warning of what is to come.
No one knows who wrote the play, or if it even really exists, but legend has it that anyone who reads or is in any way exposed to the play's second act goes mad.
This event is dedicated to that play.
We do not know for sure whether we ourselves have been affected by the play's curse, or whether it is simply just a general curse on our time. But it somehow feels reasonable to put the King in yellow, now. What do we have to lose anyway?
